5:00 Films & Media | #MMCCon 2017 | Booth #617
[UPDATED May 4, 2017]
So, that was awesome! And interesting! And fun! And educational!
Here are four quick observations from our first trip to ASAE’s #MMCCon:
1) Internal marketing experts struggle with leaders who are subject matter experts.
Several conversations at our booth hinted at concerns (and even frustrations) that subject matter experts in executive staff or board postions do not extend the same courtesy of respect to their marketing team’s expertise and experience which they themselves demand in their own interest area. “I’ve got an MBA and 15 years of experience doing this; why isn’t that enough for them to listen to my suggestions, even when they’re supported by research and data?” Which makes us wonder what can be done to help association marketers better command the respect and influence they deserve.
2) Strategy ain’t what it used to be.
“We think we should use video as a strategy.” So… no. Video CAN be one important component of your overall marketing/communications/education strategy, aligned with your business goals, and serving it’s specialized purpose side-by-side with other tactics. You could even have “a video strategy” that details a more holistic approach to how you plan to use video across your organization, but video isn’t “a strategy”. We are happy to walk you through our thinking on this, or to help you explain it to your senior team if you want to borrow a little 3rd-party credibility.
3) Which tools to use and what to measure override authentic communication.
There are SO MANY platforms and tools and services and tricks and best practices on offer, both in sessions and on the show floor. But what seemed to set the Twitter and show app conversations on fire were the conversations about authenticity: listening, real interaction, and finding common ground with the audience. Working out HOW to communicate effectively is important, don’t get us wrong… but we couldn’t help but note how difficult it was for many who stopped by to articulate WHAT they wanted to say, and – even more so – WHY their audience would care.
4) Being there makes a difference.
The core strategic theme in our business model is to be a “Trusted Advisor” to our clients. Yes, we want to make your video, but ONLY if that video is going to succeed at delivering good ROI. And that means it has to be crafted for the right reasons with the right message in the right way to reach the right audience at the right point in their journey with your brand. Which means we care about the success of your WHOLE plan. We can say that all we want, but the best way to prove it is to show up and talk with you about it in person where you are (see, that’s us following our own advice). We’ll keep coming back to talk and get to know you. We hope you’ll stop by and do the same.
See you next year!

Get ready for your close-up! We’re kicking off our first ever visit to ASAE’s #MMCCon this year!
You’ve seen us on TV, now meet us in person! Whether it was #AssnChat LIVE from Higher Logic, or during Bear Analytics’ Event Data series, the recent #CMAD livestream from our studio, or our own Video Distillery series, we’ve been spending some time in front of the camera recently.
We’ve partnered with BIO, NCA, AATA, AAA, and more, working together to meet unique challenges, and building bridges between organizations and audiences. From crowdsourced event video to integrated web-series development, it all starts with knowing where you’re headed, who can help you get there, and what you can do to move them to act. That’s what we do. All day, every day.
We look forward to seeing you at the show!
